Thermal characterization of kraft lignin prepared from mixed hardwoods

Abstract: Thermal characterization of kraft lignin (KL) prepared from mixed hardwoods was conducted to determine their thermal and thermo-oxidative stability, glass transition temperature (Tg), pyrolysis products composition, and syringyl/guaiacyl ratio. Two milled wood lignins (MWLs) from acacia (MWL-aca) and mixed hardwoods (MWL-mhw), the same hardwood species employed in the production of KL, were also characterized for comparison with KL. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that KL had higher thermal and ther… Show more

“…The weight loss in this region is attributed to the cleavage of interunit linkages in lignin, releasing monomeric phenols into the vapor phase [ 42 ]. Specifically, the peak at 287 °C signifies the degradation of aliphatic side chains, particularly the scission of β-O-4 ether linkages, while the peak at 370 °C indicates the degradation of methoxyl groups [ 43 ], based on information regarding gases released during pyrolysis [ 44 ]. Between 400 and 600 °C, the weight loss is primarily attributed to the decomposition or condensation of the aromatic ring [ 42 , 45 ].…”

“…After kraft pulping, lignin was separated and purified from the black liquor using acid precipitation method with sulfuric acid. Detailed information on pulping conditions, purification process, as well as chemical, structural, and thermal characterization of KL can be found in previous works (Mun et al 2021(Mun et al , 2022Pe et al 2023). The thoroughly dried KL was stored at ambient temperature and was used as dye material.…”

“…A calibration curve was prepared using polystyrene in the range of 1480~1,233,000 g/mol. The thermal oxidative degradation and stability of the lignin samples were subjected to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA SDT650, TA Instruments, Milford, MA, USA) [57]. The lignin samples were placed in aluminum crucibles and tested between room temperature and 800 • C at a heating rate of 10 • C/min under nitrogen conditions.…”
