Thermal behavior evaluation of ventilated roof under variable solar radiation

Abstract: A ventilated roof has a good configuration for energy purposes, in order to respect the European Directive priority for building performance requirement to reduce energy consumption. In Mediterranean regions, with high level of solar radiation, the roof design should respect comfort and energy saving, considering that climatic conditions change depending on seasons and territories. This paper illustrates a numerical investigation on a prototypal ventilated roof for residential use, in order to evaluate its the… Show more

“…Numerical analyses were made to understand the consequence of variable solar radiation in summer and winter [4]; during specific day in summer [5] to evaluate the performance of pitched roof with tiled coverings in comparison with unventilated systems and the results show that wind plays an important role. Compared to the tiles, both numerical and experimental analysis [6] were done in order to investigate the properties and the impact that clay tile materials have on the thermal performance of a ventilated roof.…”

“…A simplified ventilated roof was modelled with FLUENT in [13], showing that the heat fluxes can be reduced up to 50% during summer. Recently, the natural convection due to buoyancy forces in ventilated roofs was simulated in [14] as a function of solar radiation in different thermal conditions (summer and winter season). Buoyancy forces are demonstrated to be efficient in producing significant airflows in the channel.…”
