Abstract. Nanocomposite foams of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) reinforced by expanded graphite (EG) were prepared using supercritical nitrogen in batch foaming process. Effects of EG particle size, crosslinking of EVA chains and foaming temperature on the cell morphology and foam viscoelastic properties were investigated. EG sheet surface interestingly provide multiple heterogeneous nucleation sites for bubbles. This role is considerably intensified by incorporating lower loadings of EG with higher aspect ratio. The amorphous and non-crosslinked domains of EVA matrix constitute denser bubble areas. Higher void fraction and more uniform cell structure is achieved for non-crosslinked EVA/EG nanocomposites foamed at higher temperatures. With regard to the structural variation, the void fraction of foam samples decreases with increasing the EG content. Storage and loss moduli were analyzed to study the viscoelastic properties of nanocomposite foams. Surprisingly, the foaming process of EVA results in a drastic reduction in loss and storage moduli regardless of whether the thermoplastic matrix contains EG nanofiller or not. For the EVA/EG foams with the same composition, the nanocomposite having higher void fraction shows relatively lower loss modulus and more restricted molecular movements. The study findings have verified that the dynamics of polymer chains varies after foaming EVA matrix in the presence of EG.

Isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization processes of polyolefin nanocomposites based on low-density polyethylene/linear low-density polyethylene/nanoclay have been investigated, and the effects of nanoclay loading and dispersion state have been studied. Moreover, the isothermal crystallization of polyethylene chains has been evaluated in the quiescent and shear-induced conditions. In quiescent crystallization, adding 1 wt% nanofiller improves the crystallization rate, whereas an increment in the organoclay loading retards the crystallization process. However, an opposing effect of nanoparticles is observed in the shear-induced crystallization. The findings show that the incorporation of 5 wt% nanoclay in good dispersion state considerably accelerates the shear-induced crystallization process. This influence is found even for very weak shear flow fields. The synergistic effects of nanoclay addition and shear field presence on the crystallization process are of major significance particularly for polyolefin products, which are commonly manufactured by using melt processing methods. In this study, the correlations between the mechanical performance and structural properties of injected‐molded polyethylene (PE)/ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/nanoclay (NC) nanocomposites are investigated by revisiting the interfacial phenomena and miscibility state of the component pairs. The effects of different parameters including the injection molding temperature, mixing sequence in melt‐compounding process, blend composition, and nanoclay loading are studied. A great complexity arises in the filling and cooling process of the injected‐molded parts owing to the phase behavior of the polyolefin blend, crystallization, and morphological changes. The injection molding temperature positively influences the elastic modulus, tensile strength and impact strength of PE/EVA/NC systems through the improvements in the PE/EVA partial miscibility, mutual solubility, and interfacial interactions of PE/clay and PE/EVA pairs. By applying a two‐step mixing process before the injection molding, more nanoclay stacks with smaller thicknesses and larger clay interlayer spacing are formed. The stronger pinning effect of nanoparticles in the second mixing sequence retards the phase separation phenomenon of PE/EVA blend during the cooling stage. As a result of improved mutual PE/EVA solubility, the elastic modulus and tensile strength decrease and the impact resistance increases in the PE‐rich systems. On the other hand, an opposite trend for these properties is found for the EVA‐rich systems.
