“…There is a clear change in the relative intensity of the bands between 250 and 650 cm −1 ( δ O‐Ta‐O and υ Ta‐O‐Ta) in function of Ta 2 O 5 content. Transparent and homogeneous tantalum phosphate glasses were prepared in the binary system (100‐x)NaPO3‐xTa2O5 with x varying from 10 to 50 mol%. Thermal, structural, and optical properties, as well as crystallization mechanisms, were investigated by thermal analysis, X‐ray diffraction, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, optical absorption, transmission electron microscopy in terms of Ta2O5 content. FTIR and Raman results support the tantalum insertion in the phosphate chains with [TaO6] polyhedra cross‐linking the phosphate units. At higher Ta2O5 content, [TaO6] clusters are formed and connected to the phosphate network by P‐O‐Ta bonds. This structural evolution is in good agreement with the thermal features measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with a strong increase of the Tg temperatures up to 920°C, high thermal stability against crystallization for low Ta2O5 content and increasing of crystallization tendency for the most Ta‐concentrated samples. Besides, due to the progressive insertion of [TaO6] units, the precipitation of Na2Ta8O21 perovskite‐like phase was identified in the sample with 50 mol% of Ta2O5. The optimal heat treatment conditions were identified using DSC measurements and a transparent glass‐ceramic from 50NaPO3 to 50Ta2O5 composition was prepared. The obtaines glass‐ceramic has great potential for optical applications, such as host for rare‐earth ions, nonlinear optical materials, and ferroelectric domain.

Surface stabilization of cathode materials is urgent for guaranteeing longterm cyclability, and is important in Na cells where a corrosive Na-based electrolyte is used. The surface of P2-type layered Na 2/3 [Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 ]O 2 is modified with ionic, conducting sodium phosphate (NaPO 3 ) nanolayers, ≈10 nm in thickness, via melt-impregnation at 300 °C; the nanolayers are autogenously formed from the reaction of NH 4 H 2 PO 4 with surface sodium residues. Although the material suffers from a large anisotropic change in the c-axis due to transformation from the P2 to O2 phase above 4 V versus Na + /Na, the NaPO 3 -coated Na 2/3 [Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 ]O 2 /hard carbon full cell exhibits excellent capacity retention for 300 cycles, with 73% retention. The surface NaPO 3 nanolayers positively impact the cell performance by scavenging HF and H 2 O in the electrolyte, leading to less formation of byproducts on the surface of the cathodes, which lowers the cell resistance, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectroscopy. Time-resolved in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction study reveals that the NaPO 3 coating layer is delayed for decomposition to Mn 3 O 4 , thereby suppressing oxygen release in the highly desodiated state, enabling delay of exothermic decomposition. The findings presented herein are applicable to the development of high-voltage cathode materials for sodium batteries.

The generation of optically active precipitates and quantum dots in glasses suitable for fiber application is a challenging task, in particular, for glasses which exhibit superbroad near‐infrared (NIR) photoemission. The latter can be achieved through dopants of heavy metal and post‐transition elements, but their stabilization in the desired chemical state requires unconventional approaches of synthesis. Here, atomic clusters of tellurium and metallic tellurium quantum dots in polyphosphate matrices are considered. Starting from the understanding of glass structure where the length and the degree of crosslinking of phosphate chains can be adjusted through composition, generation and stabilization of tellurium precipitates with ultra‐broadband infrared photoluminescence are demonstrated. Increased network crosslinking and, hence, increased molecular rigidity of the host enables finely distributed precipitates of optically active tellurium species. This demonstrates a generalist approach as to how the precipitation of metallic nanostructures can be tailored through network topology. In the present situation, the size of metallic tellurium inclusions can be limited to sub‐nanometric scale, enabling a luminescence bandwidth of about 260 nm across the telecommunication bands, and an emission lifetime of several tens of μs. In a demonstration experiment, it is shown that this strategy of structural control can be transferred to application in optical fiber.
