Thermal and stress analysis of Kinta RCC dam

Abstract: The thermal analysis of roller compacted concrete dams (RCC) plays an important role in their design and construction. This paper focuses on the application and verification of a twodimensional finite element code developed for the thermal and structural analysis of RCC dams. The Kinta RCC gravity dam, which is the first RCC dam in Malaysia, has been taken for the purpose of verification of the finite element code. The dam is 78 m in height and still under construction. The actual climatic conditions and therm… Show more

“…It has a large aggregate content and the maximum size of aggregate (MSA) can reach up to 150 mm [2,3]. The combination of the temperature gradients due to heat dissipation, the slow mechanical property development and, therefore, the cracking risk at early ages are the main concerns of mass concrete [2,3].…”

“…Dam concrete is considered to be a mass concrete with a poor binder content, 100-300 kg/m 3 , and with large admixtures dosage, up to 50 % of the cement replacement [1]. It has a large aggregate content and the maximum size of aggregate (MSA) can reach up to 150 mm [2,3].…”

“…The available references, on the thermal effect due to the solar radiation, have focused on bridges [7][8], dams [9][10] and pavements [11][12]. Considering the large structural difference among large-span steel structures, bridges, dams and pavements, the proposed numerical methods in these papers are not directly applied to large-span steel structures.…”
