Thermal and Rheological Properties of PGN, PNIMMO and P(GN/NIMMO) Synthesized via Mesylate Precursors

Abstract: Glycidyl nitrate and 3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane were synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction using tetrabutylammonium nitrate as a solid-liquid phase-transfer catalyst, then poly(glycidyl nitrate) (PGN), poly(3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane) (PNIMMO) and poly (glycidyl nitrate-r-3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane) (P(GN/ NIMMO)) were synthesized via cationic polymerization. The synthesized monomers and polymers were characterized by fourier transform infrared and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance.… Show more

“…3, the characteristic absorption peaks at 1632, 1278 and 870 cm À1 correspond to -O-NO 2 from PNMMO. 19 The appearance of strong peaks at 1225 and 1161 cm À1 was attributed to -CF 3 , [20][21][22] the appearance of peaks at 1412-1534 cm À1 was attributed to the characteristic absorption of TDI, and the characteristic absorption peaks at 3311, 1710 and 1533 cm À1 certied the formation of urethane linkage. 23,24 Therefore, these results gave strong evidence that the prepolymer process indeed occurred by the formation of PBFMO-b-PNMMO.…”

“…4. The signals at 3.75 and 4.4 ppm were attributed to PNMMO, 19 and the signal at 3.26 ppm was attributed to PBFMO. The corresponding carbon signals of the methylene carbons from PBFMO and PNMMO appeared at 73.6 and 75 ppm.…”

“…Polyglycidyl nitrate (PGN) is an energetic binder with -ONO 2 groups. Due to its high energy density and high oxygen content, [1][2][3][4][5] it is regarded as one of the most potential energetic adhesives in solid propellants in the future. PGN has been synthesized in the last century, so there are some reports on its synthesis, 6,7 modication 8,9 and application, [10][11][12] but studies on the reaction kinetics of the PGN curing reaction system have been rare.…”

“…Generally, it can be divided into two categories. The one kind contains azide, such as glycidyl azide polymer , 3,3‐bis(azidomethyl)oxetan ; the other kind contains nitrate, such as nitrated HTPB , polyNIMMO and polyGLYN .…”
