Experimental and numerical studies of cogasification of woody biomass and sewage sludge have been carried out. The gasification experiments were performed in a fixed-bed downdraft gasifier and the experimental results show that 20 wt % dried sewage sludge in the feedstock was effectively gasified to generate producer gas comprising over 30 vol % of syngas with an average lower heating value of 4.5 MJ/Nm 3 . Further increasing sewage sludge content to 33 wt % leads to the blockage of gasifier, which is resulted from the formation of agglomerated ash. The numerical models were then developed to simulate the reactions taking place in four different zones of the gasifier (i.e., drying, pyrolysis, combustion, and reduction zones) and to predict the producer gas composition and cold gas efficiency. The deviation between the numerical and experimental results obtained was lower than 10%.a Typical sewage sludge examples were collected from Ulu Padan wastewater treatment plant, Singapore.

Pyrolysis properties and kinetic analysis of lake sediment, as well as evolution characteristics of the gaseous products at 5 ∘ C/min, 10 ∘ C/min, and 20 ∘ C/min, were investigated by TG-FTIR. Comparison to the TG and DTG curves at different heating rates, the pyrolysis process at 10 ∘ C/min could describe the sediment pyrolysis characteristics better than at 5 ∘ C/min and 20 ∘ C/min; thus the process of sediment pyrolysis could be considered as four stages. From the kinetics analysis, the nth-order chemical reaction model was suitable to describe the sediment pyrolysis reaction well. The values of n were within 2.55-3.42 and activation energy was ranged from 15.83 KJ/mol to 57.92 KJ/mol at different heating rates. The gaseous products of H 2 O, CO 2 , CO, CH 4 , and SO 2 and several functional groups (C-H, C=O, and C-O) could be found from the IR spectrum. From the evolution characteristics with the temperature, there were two evolution peaks for CO 2 and one peak for CH 4 and SO 2 . However, the evolution of CO always increased. Besides, the evolution peak for CO 2 , CH 4 , and SO 2 all shifted to the low temperature region with the decrease of heating rate. The results could provide theoretical basis for harmless treatment and resource utilization of lake sediment.

Abstract:The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of temperature during the treatment process as well as the effect of adding plant materials to sewage sludge on selected chemical properties and Vibrio fischeri response. The mixtures were placed in a chamber furnace, under airless conditions. Two temperature procedures were applied: 300 and 600ºC; the exposure time in both cases was 15 minutes. Thermal treatment of sewage sludge without a plant component is not well-founded and may cause an increase in concentration of trace elements. Using the temperature of 300ºC caused significantly lower changes in the contents of total forms of trace elements than using the temperature of 600ºC. The metals extracted from the studied mixtures were not toxic for the Vibrio fischeri. In the case of the fractional composition of humic compounds, thermal treatment of mixtures of sewage sludge and plant materials is not beneficial in terms of labile fractions, but it had a beneficial effect on stabilizing the durable bonds between C compounds in those mixtures.
