A qualitative, phenomenological approach was used in this study to examine how undergraduate Latina students in computing leveraged community cultural wealth (CCW) to succeed in college. Preliminary findings suggest that students leveraged familial, navigational, and resistant capital to succeed in higher education computing spaces. Latina students derived valuable knowledge and skills from their families that they translated into their computing spaces, including content and industry knowledge, traits such as confidence and self-efficacy, and assistance with educational logistics. Students utilized family relationships, online academic resources, classroom peers, student organizations, and campus offices to navigate the challenges they encountered. Students also resisted marginalization in both internal (e.g., individual persistence) and external (e.g., speaking up against injustice) ways to benefit themselves and support future Latina students entering computing fields. Specifically, students leveraged their positions within identity-based student organizations and the larger computing field to mentor and serve as role models. This study suggests that scholars and practitioners might support Latina students by broadening their view of support networks, closing gaps in the computing curriculum, involving family, and acknowledging and removing burdens on minoritized students.

This study examines whether the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE-IT grant program identifies and funds institutions that improve faculty gender equity. By using matching procedures and a two-way fixed-effect event study, we find that when universities received ADVANCE-IT grants, their proportion and headcount of women faculty as full-time new-hire, overall faculty, and tenured and tenure-track faculty are not different from multiple comparison groups of universities—including universities that received other types of ADVANCE grants. Drawing on the concept of intersectionality, we further disaggregate women faculty into subracial/ethnic groups. We did not find consistent evidence supporting that ADVANCE-IT universities increase the proportion or headcount of women faculty in subracial/ethnic groups. We discuss implications for federal grantmaking and diversifying higher education faculty.

The purpose of this chapter is to develop a deeper understanding of the different critical components that influence Latina students' persistence in pursuing undergraduate STEM degrees at HSIs. As a qualitative case study, 10 open-ended individual interviews were conducted with Latina undergraduate college students pursuing STEM disciplines. The findings revealed that participants used strategies to help them surpass obstacles related to academic difficulties, such as finding allies in their classes and informal faculty mentors to be guided and advised. Furthermore, the involvement of family was evident to vent problems and release stress as well as the development of strong bonds with participants' fathers with STEM backgrounds. It was evident that participants developed and adopted resiliency attitudes while pursuing STEM, which highlights their cultural legacy highly influencing their persistence and academic success.
