Therapeutic use of self as defined by Swedish occupational therapists working with clients with cognitive impairments following acquired brain injury: A Delphi study

Abstract: The empirical descriptions generated from this study may help occupational therapists working with clients with cognitive impairments following acquired brain injury to describe how and with what intention they use themselves therapeutically in the rehabilitation process. In occupational therapy education, the results may be used to highlight how the concept may be understood in practice and to discuss it in relation to different client groups.

“…One prerequisite for power shift could be equality and a dialogue initiated by staff where time is allocated to a conversation about how an older person wants to participate in his/her care (Algilani, James & Kihlgren, 2016). To create a relationship with the intention of enhancing the patient's opportunities to participate and reach his/her goals has been emphasized (Holmqvist, Holmefur, & Ivarsson, 2013;Taylor, 2008), where a responsive relationship that creates an emotional closeness between patient and professional becomes important (Hedman et al, 2015;Moser, Houtepen, Spreeuwenberg, & Widdershoven, 2010).…”

“…A Delphi technique offers participants a focused structure for providing their thoughts on personal experiences, while remaining anonymous during rounds of consensus building. Being able to reconsider and revise answers in private may also emphasise the reliability of the findings by reducing the risk of group coercion 22. Considering the participants in cancer rehabilitation to be the experts in their experience as a group is not only crucial to the design of a Delphi study; it is an opportunity for cancer rehabilitation participants to voice their opinions formally.…”

“…Holmqvist et al 22 used a Delphi study to define the therapeutic relationship from a professional perspective. This research aims to build on their work by exploring rehabilitation participants’ perceptions of importance of therapeutic relationships, given their role as collaborators in self-management outcome development 27.…”
