Therapeutic use of an antibiotic-resistant Bifidobacterium preparation in men exposed to high-dose  -irradiation

Abstract: Five men received high-dose, uneven, whole-body y-irradiation by accidental exposure to an unshielded I3'Cs source. Analysis of the faeces 9-12 days post-irradiation showed low numbers of anaerobes and high counts of enterobacteria and staphylococci in four of the patients and total viable counts of < 103/g in one. All five were treated with systemic ampicillin and gentamicin and oral nystatin commencing 4-7 days after irradiation.

“…Bifidobacterium is known to be a predominant constituent of the human intestinal microflora (Finegold et al 1977). The bacterium is distributed from the distal part of the small intestine to the large intestine and is believed to have beneficial effects as a probiotic (Kohwi et al 1982;Nakaya 1984;Korschunov et al 1996). Recently, interest has focused on its anti-infectious effects, particularly the age-old concept of using bacterial preparations with inhibitory activity against enteric pathogens for protecting domestic animals and humans.…”
