Therapeutic Potential of Select Dietary Compounds in the Management of Hypertension and its Cardiovascular Complications

Abstract: Hypertension is a common risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality worldwide. Proper nutrition and diet are known to play an indispensable role in the treatment and management of hypertension. Bioactive compounds that occur in small quantities in foods such as onions, fish and red wine are being intensively studied to uncover their vasoprotective, antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effect,s which are beneficial to attenuate chronic disease and protect human health. “…It is well recognized that oxidative stress in the central areas is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular control. In hypertensive rats, quercetin could reduce oxidative stress levels in the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys (Valookaran et al, 2022). Quercetin can also inhibit the generation of free radicals and increase the expression of ERK, PPARγ (Zhao, Wang, et al, 2021).…”

“…Primary hypertension is a risk factor for and a contributor to various diseases. These include cardiovascular ailments like stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and conditions like renal disease and hypertensive retinopathy [1,[5][6][7] . Hypertensive retinopathy typically advances subtly, often devoid of symptoms, but in severe cases, it can lead to reduced vision, eye swelling, and even double vision [7] .…”

“…Shift work, short sleep duration or poor sleep, and other forms of circadian disruption might increase the risk of hypertension [9]. Bioactive compounds that occur in small quantities in foods such as onions, fish, and red wine are being intensively studied to uncover their vasoprotective, antioxidant, antiproliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects which are beneficial to attenuate chronic disease and protect human health [10].…”
