Therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells for diabetes

Abstract: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are self-renewing multipotent cells that have the capacity to secrete multiple biologic factors that can restore and repair injured tissues. Preclinical and clinical evidence have substantiated the therapeutic benefit of MSCs in various medical conditions. Currently, MSCs are the most commonly used cell-based therapy in clinical trials because of their regenerative effects, ease of isolation, and low immunogenicity. Experimental and clinical studies have provided promising results… Show more

“…hMSCs are now being investigated in many applications in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and cell‐based therapy. It is important to keep the stemness of the cells since a lower expression of the markers would decrease the efficiency of therapies . In line with immunophenotyping, mechanosensing ability is also a valued quality …”

“…The present therapeutic options have not been successful in preventing the long‐term complications triggered by T1D, stimulating the search for alternative approaches such as the use of stem cells . Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) can be defined by their ability to differentiate into a variety of mesenchymal tissue types (adipose tissue, cartilage and bone) .…”

“…Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) can be defined by their ability to differentiate into a variety of mesenchymal tissue types (adipose tissue, cartilage and bone) . In addition, the use of MSCs is an attractive therapeutic strategy that is able to modify the microenvironment of injured tissues contributing to tissue repair and regeneration, as well as improving the metabolic profile in various animal models of diabetes . There is little evidence regarding the effects of MSCs on muscular dysfunction caused by DM.…”
