Therapeutic Potential of Medicinal Plants and Their Constituents on Lung Inflammatory Disorders

Abstract: Acute bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) are essentially lung inflammatory disorders. Various plant extracts and their constituents showed therapeutic effects on several animal models of lung inflammation. These include coumarins, flavonoids, phenolics, iridoids, monoterpenes, diterpenes and triterpenoids. Some of them exerted inhibitory action mainly by inhibiting the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and nuclear transcription factor-κB activation. Especially, many flavonoid d… Show more

“…In terms of COPD treatment, various plants have been used in many countries for thousands of years. 15 , 16 Among the many medicinal plants used in COPD therapy, medicinal mushrooms such as Ophiocordyceps sinensis (formerly known as Cordyceps sinensis [ C. sinensis ]) have shown some promising clinical results for COPD treatment. Ophiocordyceps sinensis , or Dong Chong Xia Cao (winter worm and summer grass) in Chinese, is a mushroom that grows on caterpillars, and has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine.…”

“…Some of them exerted inhibitory effects mainly by modulating the NF-κB and MAPK pathways. Especially, many flavonoid derivatives, such as Baicalin, Hesperidin, Luteolin, and Naringin, obviously presented effectiveness on lung inflammatory disorders [ 10 ].…”

“…Certain flavonoid derivatives inhibit iNOS expression without affecting iNOS enzyme activity (Kim, Cheon, Kim, Kim, & Kim, ). Several flavonoid derivatives were demonstrated to attenuate lung inflammatory responses in animals (Kim, Lim, & Kwon, ). Here, we demonstrate that aurantio‐obtusin (anthraquinone) inhibits iNOS expression without affecting iNOS enzyme activity.…”
