Therapeutic Potential of Honey and Propolis on Ocular Disease

Abstract: Honey and propolis have recently become the key target of attention for treating certain diseases and promoting overall health and well-being. A high content of flavonoids and phenolic acids found in both honey and propolis contributes to the antioxidant properties to scavenge free radicals. Honey and propolis also exhibited antibacterial effects where they act in two ways, namely the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and gluconic acids following the enzymatic activities of glucose oxidase, which exerts o… Show more

“…A wide variety of bee products is used in traditional medicine and cosmetics (honey, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly, bee bread, bee venom), due to their bioactive compounds with antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antitumor properties (Luo et al, 2021). Therapeutic uses include, but are not limited to, the treatment of gastrointestinal tract diseases (ulcer lesions, gastritis), oral disorders (caries, gingivitis, oral cancer), dermatological problems (wound healing, dermatitis, epidermis, and dermis inflammation), and ocular conditions (conjunctivitis, corneal injury, chronic inflammation) (Abd Rashid et al, 2022; Luo et al, 2021; Zullkiflee et al, 2022).…”
