Therapeutic Potential and Safety of the Cinnamomum zeylanicum Methanolic Extract Against Chronic Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Mice

Abstract: BackgroundThis experimental study determined the in vitro, in vivo, and toxicity effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum methanolic extract (CZME) against Toxoplasma gondii infection.MethodsThe in vitro activity of CZME T. gondii tachyzoites was studied by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. Infected mice were treated with CZME for two weeks at doses of 20, 40, and 60 mg/kg/day. Then, the therapeutic effects of CZME were evaluated by assessing the mean number and mean size of… Show more

“…As reported elsewhere, S. palutris L. methanolic extract prepared from the plants collected in the United States at a concentration 50 mg/mL showed 72.9% ± 1.8% of inhibition on egg hatching in pathogenic nematode Haemonchus contortus ( Acharya et al, 2014 ). Similarly, Barati et al showed a significant decrease in the number of Giardia lamblia cysts under the influence of S. lavandulifolia n-hexane and water extracts prepared from the leaves of the plant ( Barati et al, 2017 ), while Alanazi et al found a relevant activity of its methanolic extract against Toxoplasma gondii ( Alanazi et al, 2023 ) 40 .…”

“…The in vivo studies on a model of experimental animals confirmed possible applications of hydroalcoholic S. sylvatica L. extracts. For instance, it was proved that the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of the extract connected mainly with the presence of iridoids, flavonoids and sesquiterpenes improved the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome in rats ( Alanazi et al, 2023 ). The promising results concerning other Stachys L. taxa were also obtained in the studies conducted on mice, e.g., certain fractions of S. riederi var.…”

“…Recently, natural plant extracts and components have extremely been experienced in toxoplasmosis, which is mostly suggested as an alternative remedy with high activity, high efficiency, and low toxicity. Up to now, components and/or extracts of Artemisia annua (Secrieru et al., 2020 ), Myristica fragrans and Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Choi et al., 2013 ), Dracocephalum kotschyi (Khamesipour et al., 2021 ), Azadirachta indica (Nemati et al., 2022 ), Cinnamomum camphora (Alanazi & Almohammed, 2022 ), Lippia multiflora and Combretum micranthum (Benoit‐Vical et al., 2000 ), Eurycoma longifolia (Kavitha et al., 2012 ), Sorghum bicolor (Abugri et al., 2016 ), and Mentha pulegium L . and Rubus idaeus L (Mohammad Rahimi et al., 2020 ) have been reported to be effective on toxoplasmosis.…”

“…Furthermore, the anticancer activities were also evident for C. zeylanicum extract by modulating various cellular signaling cascades [20]. C. zeylanicum extract was also an effective antimicrobial agent against the infection of Toxoplasma gondii in murine models [21]. The C. cassia is another important plant belonging to the family; it was effective against the gastrointestinal toxicities in animal models [22].…”
