Therapeutic Hypothermia to Treat a Newborn With Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy

Abstract: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is caused by neonatal asphyxia and can lead to mortality or long-term neurodevelopmental morbidity in neonates. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is one of the few effective ways to manage mitigating neurologic sequelae. The authors describe the case of a neonate who had a perinatal hypoxic insult and sustained no long-term sequelae after being treated with TH. It is important that osteopathic physicians who provide obstetric and gynecologic, perinatal, and emergency medical care are… Show more

“…18 Few studies have conducted in medical resource-limited settings relating admission hypothermia to neonatal morbidity and mortality, 19,23,[27][28][29][30][31] and most examine only mortality in low birth weight infants [31][32][33][34] Complicating full understanding of this, induced hypothermia may be used for therapeutic purposes. 2,[35][36][37] The purpose of this study is to identify the mortality risk associated with hypothermia for neonates admitted to an eastern Ethiopian NICU.…”

“…Вплив гіпотермії полягає в тому, щоб збільшити тривалість реперфузії та дати можливість відновитись більшій кількості клітин. Гіпотермія всього тіла зменшує ризик смерті або втрати працездатності в майбутньому у немовлят із середнім або важким ступенем гіпоксично-ішемічної енцефалопатії [5,6].…”

“…In hypoxic settings, Wnt signalling promotes matrix-metalloproteinase-9, which stimulates proliferation and migration of embryonic neural stem cells in culture (12,13) . Dkk-1 may be released into the peripheral circulation during acute ischemia of the brain based on these findings.…”
