Therapeutic Hypothermia in Brazil: A MultiProfessional National Survey

Abstract: Objective To determine the rate of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) use, current practices, and long-term follow-up. Study Design Prospective cross-sectional national survey with 19 questions related to the assessment of hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and TH practices. An online questionnaire was made available to health care professionals working in neonatal care in Brazil. Results A total of 1,092 professionals replied, of which 681 (62%) reported using TH in their units. Of these,… Show more

“…Compliance issues were also found in cooling procedures, including the timing of TH initiation, cooling temperature, and cooling duration. Similar practice variations have been reported by a recent study in Brazil [ 32 ]. Standardization in the health care setting has been shown to improve safety and patient outcomes [ 36 ].…”

“…In developed countries, much effort has been devoted to disseminating and standardizing TH in clinical practice [ 24 29 ], leading to TH becoming the standard of care in clinical practice. The implementation of TH in developing countries faces multiple challenges [ 30 – 32 ]. While data from low-resource settings is limited, a recent systemic review showed that hypothermia efficacy was not associated with countries’ income levels [ 33 ].…”

“…Among the professionals that used TH, only 26.4% reported the use of servo‐controlled devices, while 53% used ice packs as the method of choice. This has been the case of more than half of the neonatal units in Brazil, which highlights the relevance of our study, showing the feasibility and effectiveness of using ice packs as an alternative, low‐cost method of cooling (Variane et al, 2018).…”

“…using a closed social media group called "Neonatologia Brasil" that has over 18,000 members. 6 In terms of traffic behavior, the app had 3,723 sessions overall of which roughly one-third were returning users. The prenatal diagnosis and risk stratification subsections were the most frequently visited followed by postnatal ventilation.…”
