Enteral feeding is more favorable than parenteral one because it can significantly intervene against the colonization of bacteria and preserve gut functions. However, this necessitates the presence of a good-functioning gastrointestinal tract. Young infants, critically ill children, and patients with neurological disabilities are the most probable candidates to perform enteral feeding. In the present literature review, we have discussed the indications and long-term results of enteral feeding in pediatric settings. Our results show that modality is a safe and efficacious modality in these settings with favorable outcomes and fewer adverse events and complications. Many indications were reported for the modality, and in general, children that usually suffer from severe weight deficit, weight faltering, and growth retardation are indicated to receive enteral nutrition. Some contraindications were also reported in the literature, and in general, conditions affecting the function and health status gastrointestinal tract should recommend against conducting approaches of enteral feeding. Different complications were reported, including mechanical, metabolic, infectious, gastrointestinal, and drug-related complications that might lead to worsened prognosis and can significantly impact the long-term outcomes of these patients. Therefore, paying adequate attention should be considered in these cases to prevent the development of these complications, and provide all the necessary procedures to potentially manage the expected adverse events.

Background & Aims: This study aims to assess the application value of the real-time camera image-guided nasoenteric tube placement in critically ill COVID-19 patients undergoing endotracheal intubation and prone position ventilation therapy. Methods: We enrolled 116 COVID-19 patients receiving endotracheal intubation and prone position ventilation therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients were randomly divided into the real-time camera image-guided nasoenteric tube placement (n = 58) and bedside blind insertion (n = 58) groups. The success rate, placement time, complications, cost, heart rate, respiratory rate, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE-II) scores were compared between the 2 groups. Results: For ICU patients with COVID-19 undergoing prone position ventilation therapy, the success rate and cost were significantly higher in the real-time camera image-guided group compared to the bedside blind group ( P < .05). The placement time and complication incidence were significantly lower in the real-time camera image-guided group ( P < .05). The differences in heart rate, respiratory rate, GCS scores, and APACHE-II scores were insignificant ( P > .05). Conclusions: The real-time camera image-guided nasoenteric tube placement system had advantages for ICU COVID-19 patients undergoing prone position ventilation therapy, including a high success rate, short placement time, and no impact on patient position during tube placement. Real-time camera image-guided nasoenteric tube placement can be performed in any position, and demonstrates high efficiency, safety, and accuracy.

Introduction. The question of selecting the optimal diameter of gastrostomic tubes for enteric feeding remains unresolved.The aim of the study is to justify the choice of tube diameter for enteric feeding by studying deposits on the inner wall. Materials and Methods.A model for the introduction of specialized enteric and blender food through a tube at a temperature ranging from 36° to 40 °C has been developed. Polyvinylchloride probes with a length of 110 cm and an outer diameter ranging from 10 to 30 Fr with a step of 2 Fr are used as nutrient tubes. An imitation is performed nourishment 5 times a day for 300 ml for 30 days. After simulation, the probe's internal clearance will wash 150 ml of water with a temperature of 37 °C, dried. At the beginning and end of the experiment, weighing and measuring the length of the probe was carried out.The results and their discussion. The specialized feed caused a blockage of 10 and 12 Fr probes, which were removed by washing 150 ml of water. There was no signifi cant change in the mass of probes after the enteric feeding, indicating minimal sediments on the inner surface. The blending caused a blockage of probes 10, 12 and 14 Fr in diameter. Probes 10 and 12 Fr in diameter could not be recovered from washing with water. The power deposition on the inner walls of the probes was visually determined. No signifi cant changes in the length of the probes were observed during the experiment. However, the change in the mass of probes after the blender feed is statistically larger than after the specialized one (p<0.001, Mann-Whitney criterion). Conclusion.It is advisable to use gastrostomic tubes with a diameter of 14-18 Fr to feed specialized mixtures. 18-24 Fr diameter tubes should be used when using a blender supply.
