Therapeutic Effect of Rumex japonicus Houtt. on DNCB-Induced Atopic Dermatitis-Like Skin Lesions in Balb/c Mice and Human Keratinocyte HaCaT Cells

Abstract: Rumex japonicus Houtt. (RJ) is traditionally used in folk medicines to treat patients suffering from skin disease in Korea and other parts of East Asia. However, the beneficial effect of RJ extract on atopic dermatitis (AD) has not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of RJ on AD in vitro and in vivo. Treatment with RJ inhibited the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) as well as the activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)… Show more

“…DNCB also induced remarkable AD lesions such as hemorrhage, edema, excoriation, and scaling, diminished by CA treatment (Figure 5a). Since AD often expands as a systemic immune response, it can affect the immune organs [32]. and scaling, diminished by CA treatment (Figure 5a).…”

“…and scaling, diminished by CA treatment (Figure 5a). Since AD often expands as a systemic immune response, it can affect the immune organs [32]. Therefore, we evaluated the weight of the lymph nodes measured in the 14th day to examine whether the topical application of CA provided an anti-AD effect in mice (Figure 6a,b).…”

“…Additionally, RJH inhibits the activation of ERK, P38, Akt, and nuclear factor‐kappa B in tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α)‐stimulated HaCaT cells. The dosage was 25 and 50 μg/ml in vitro and 4 and 8 mg/ml in vivo via the topical application (Lee et al, ; Yang et al, ).…”

“…In modern days, it is proven to take an anti‐microorganic, purgative, anti‐inflammatory, and anti‐tumor effects (Chen, Guo, Li, & Fan, ). Its chemical constituents can be categorized into anthraquinones, flavonoids, and triterpenoids (Wang et al, ; Yang et al, ). Despite these therapeutic potentials, it is a lack of comprehensive review to clarify the associated knowledge.…”

“…Plant origin substances, extracts and their particular fractions, essential oils, and seed powders were found to reverse or alleviate disturbances of organism resulting from exposure to different chemicals. The resent research included various compounds, e.g., hepatotoxic tetrachloromethane (CCl 4 ) used for years as a solvent and now regarded as an environmental pollutant [ 14 ], aluminium known for its neurotoxicity [ 74 ], aflatoxins produced by toxigenic fungi which made food contaminants [ 75 ], and chemicals used in industry and laboratory experiments like thioacetamide [ 76 ] or 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene [ 77 ]. Additionally, plant origin substances were proved to decrease mouse mortality resulting from the acute CCl 4 toxicity [ 78 ] as well as from Concanavalin A exposure [ 79 ].…”
