“…In light of calls for the improved evaluation of psychological trauma (e.g., Courtois, 2008), it may be useful to consider temperament an important construct to assess among survivors of IPV and potentially other traumatic experiences. Indeed, clinical intervention literature has increasingly emphasized the role of assessing temperament and other aspects of individual characteristics, both as a means of formulating and selecting appropriate treatment protocols (Harkness & Lilienfeld, 1997) and as a therapeutic intervention in and of itself (Finn, 2007), especially for survivors of psychological trauma (Evans, 2012; Overton, 2012). Future research on how best to leverage temperament traits specifically in the clinical assessment of and intervention with survivors of IPV and other traumatic stressors would be useful extensions of this study.…”

“…Measuring decentering processes in stories has the advantage of providing a congenial platform for intervention. Using a collaborative (Fischer, 1994) or therapeutic assessment approach (Finn, 2007), the clinician familiar with the Feffer et al (2008) scoring system might test the limits after storytelling with an extended inquiry that provides increasing structure to scaffold a higher-level score (e.g., by asking, “What might this character be thinking? Does she know what he is planning to do?…”

“…In this model of child custody evaluation there is an intrinsic connection between assessment and “family transformative potential,” a connection that is also at the basis of a therapeutic assessment approach (Finn, 2007 ) and that, therefore, goes well beyond the production of a static snapshot of the participating subjects (Gennari and Tamanza, 2017 ). In fact, knowledge of the people and their relations is connected to the dynamic of the separation, as a transformation occurring in the way family is lived during the separation.…”
