Introduction Termination of pregnancy for fetal anomalies is well reported in the literature and accepted by the western and other non-Muslim communities, but Muslim communities’ perception is poorly reported and rarely mentioned. This study aims to evaluate the perception of the Saudi community on abortion decisions as a management option in congenital fetal anomalies. Methods This is an observational, descriptive cross-sectional study, where participants of Saudi nationality, living in Jeddah, and consenting to participate in the research filled up a self-administrated, structured, close-ended, validated questionnaire. The level of agreement was measured on a Likert scale. Results A total of 574 participants were included in the study; 43.3% were female. The mean age of the participants was 30.3 years (SD = 10.6). Undergraduate students were 58.9%, single participants were 56.3%, and participants without children were 61.3%. The prevalence of abortion was 17.9%. The overall agreement on accepting abortion as an option was 61%. Gender (p<0.001), knowledge level (p=0.003), and religion (p=0.01) were the most important factors that influenced people’s perception of abortion. Other factors like participants’ age (p=0.09), level of education (p=0.48), marital status (p=0.16), having children (p=0.48), and gender of the fetus (p=0.2) were not significant factors in their decision to choose abortion. Conclusion Overall, Saudis were more inclined to accept abortion in case of a confirmed congenital anomaly, yet females were more accepting of the idea than males.

With the recent overturning of Roe V. Wade by the Supreme Court, access to abortions in many regions across the United States will become very limited as laws regarding fetal termination will be determined by state legislators rather than on a federal level. This article highlights the effects of Roe V. Wade's abolishment on individuals that can get pregnant, how unwanted pregnancies will affect society in general, and reasonable steps forward following the ban. We conducted an electronic search using PubMed, Google, and Google Scholar. The search was retrospective, and the preliminary results focused on articles about the rationale behind pregnancy termination and the overall effects of abortion and the ban. Review papers, original papers, and newspaper articles were eligible for use. Sample size and region of publication were not exclusionary criteria. Each author independently reviewed and extracted data to write up each assigned section, and group collaborations occurred to create the final draft. Out of the 93 resources reviewed, 32 sources were deemed eligible and used in this article. These resources included 23 journal articles, eight websites, and one book.. The data gathered showed that while abortions have many potential complications even when performed under regulated conditions, taking away the choice of those with a uterus is also not without consequence. The economic, familial, and societal implications should be considered moving forward as safety nets will need to be implemented for people with uterus and children involved.

We studied the caring, parenting, and support services for children with special needs in Ghana. Many of the study participants reported re-adjusting their lives in virtually every domain–social, economic, and emotional to deal with and manage the new realities. How parents navigate this space varied considerably from setting to setting. Regardless of individual and interpersonal resources, community, institutional, and policy circumstances seemed to exacerbate notions of disability. In many instances, parents had a low depth of suspicion about the precursors to disabling events in their children. Parents are constantly pursuing health care, including a cure for their children with disabilities. Views about “otherness” were noted, and these tended to undermine medical interpretations/explanations of disability generally, which in turn affected formal education and health-seeking for children. Institutional arrangements exist to encourage parents to invest in their children regardless of their perceived abilities. However, these do not seem to be sufficient, particularly for health and formal education. Programming and policy implications are highlighted.
