Theranostic Fibers for Simultaneous Imaging and Drug Delivery

Abstract: Abstract:New methods for creating theranostic systems with simultaneous encapsulation of therapeutic, diagnostic and targeting agents are much sought after. This work reports for the first time the use of coaxial electrospinning to prepare such systems in the form of core-shell fibers. Eudragit S100 was used to form the shell of the fibers, while the core comprised polyethylene oxide loaded with the magnetic resonance contrast agent Gd(DTPA) (Gd(III) diethylenetriaminepentaacetate hydrate) and indomethacin as … Show more

“…Certainly, they are still some other complicated issues such as final applications of the electrosprayed particles. For examples, these particles can be easily exploited for providing sustained release, fast release and biphasic release [22][23][24]; the drugs can be both therapeutic ingredients and also agents for detection [25,26]; and the polymeric matrix can be water soluble, degradable or insoluble [27,28]. As for a complicated engineering issue, it has at least three layers of meaning.…”

“…The traditional monolithic nanoparticles will release all they contained drug at the stomach when soluble polymer is exploited as the drug carrier ("A" in Figure 3). However, when a thin layer of pH-sensitive polymer is applied on the monolithic nanoparticles to form a core-shell structure, the drug can be sent to the colon region for local drug delivery ("B" and "C" in Figure 3) [27][28][29]. Certainly, there are numerous other potential applications that wait to be developed by the researchers, including the graduate students.…”
