Theory of Plasma-Cascade Instability

Abstract: In this paper we present the theory of a novel micro-bunching instability occurring in charged particle beams propagating along a straight trajectory: a Plasma-Cascade Instability (PCI). This instability was confirmed by 3D numerical simulations [1] and observed experimentally [2]. It can by driven by variation of beam's density and/or particle's mobility.
