Theory of coexistence of superconductivity and ferroelectricity: A dynamical symmetry model

Abstract: We propose and investigate a model for the coexistence of Superconductivity (SC) and Ferroelectricity (FE) based on the dynamical symmetries su(2) for the (pseudo-spin) SC sector , h(4) for the (displaced oscillator) FE sector and su(2) ⊗ h(4) for the composite system. We assume a minimal symmetryallowed coupling ,and simplify the hamiltonian using a double mean-field approximation (DMFA). A variational coherent-state (VCS) trial wave-function is used for the ground state : the energy, and the relevant order p… Show more

“…͑4͒ below, can then be treated using the double-mean-field approximation as in Ref. 7. Results obtained for the mutual dependence of each order parameter on the other are physically reasonable and, as shown, also graphically based on numerical solution of the resulting equations, giving support to the Matthias conjecture that the FE and SC orders tend to exclude each other.…”

“…For very large values of ion , namely, about 100 or more, we do not gain much, but being close to the ferroelectric transition, we risk instabilities; in the ferroelectric state, the interaction weakens. 13 The depth of the modulation of the dielectric constant must be extremely large. We take ion min ϭ2, ion average ϭ30, and ion max ϭ58.…”
