Theory, Ideal Theory and the Theory of Ideals

Abstract: The recent prominence of the ideal/non‐ideal debate is largely due to the fact that it offers a vocabulary in which to diagnose what many see as a key problem of political theory: its relative unwillingness to provide solutions to urgent problems facing people here and now; or for people as they are rather than as they should be. The primary aim of this article is to offer an improved understanding of the territory that the ideal/non‐ideal debate relates to.

“…The recent debate on ideal and non-ideal theory revealed ways in which we can interpret action guidance paradox of ideal theory and how it is possible to respond to it from the standpoint of ideal theory (Robeyns 2008;Swift 2008;Valentini 2009;Hamlin and Stemplowska 2012 (Swift 2008, p. 374). These are indeed relevant issues, each one deserving careful examination.…”

“…77 -78). Note that the belief in rational agreement and consensus on certain substantive values is insensitive to political reality does not just entail that that belief is merely practically difficult to achieve but nonetheless conceivable (pace Gutmann & Thompson, 2012;Philp, 2007;Valentini, 2012;Hamlin & Stemplowska, 2012;Freeden, 2012). What is at stake here is not merely a matter of practical 'feasibility' or 'constraint' but rather a question of what should be seen as plausible even in theory, even under the most ideal of circumstances.…”
