Theory for High‐Angular‐Resolution Photoelectron Holograms Considering the Inelastic Mean Free Path and the Formation Mechanism of Quasi‐Kikuchi Band

Abstract: In recent years, highly accurate measurements of photoelectron holograms have become possible through the development of electron energy analyzers with an energy range of 300–1000 eV. Effects of the inelastic mean free path (IMFP) and thermal vibration became apparent in the hologram pattern. For example, the quasi‐Kikuchi band is clearly observed, which cannot be explained by conventional multiple scattering theories. Herein, the theory of photoelectron holograms is summarized, considering the inelastic scatt… Show more

“…The main difference is the observed angular range, covering the full 2 solid angle for DIANA, and a momentum range of diameter ∼20 Å −1 for the ToF-MM, corresponding to a polar angular range of up to 0-15°, depending on kinetic energy. The relative angular resolution is comparable: 0.5°for DIANA 41) and 0.034°for the ToF-MM. 16) Principal limitations are posed by the lens aberrations, limiting the maximum accessible angular range for the ToF-MM and the micro-lens action of the grid meshes 42) for display-type analyzers.…”

“…Thermal vibrations can be considered as atoms oscillating around their ideal positions with a Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation, , given as hu 2 i/6 = 2 /2. This introduces an additional term in the holographic oscillation (Matsushita, Muro, Yokoya et al, 2020),…”

“…For sake of conciseness we will only briefly mention further important aspects of photoelectron diffraction. High-quality photoelectron diffractograms can be considered as atomic holograms [233]; a refined theoretical treatment has been published very recently [234]. Since scattering cross sections are generally spin dependent, spin-polarised photoelectron c) and (i), (j) calculated fingerprint hXPD patterns for Mn atoms on tetrahedral (i) and hexagonal interstitial sites (j).…”
