Theory and Phenomenology of Neutrino Oscillations and Masses

Abstract: We review some fundamental aspects of the theory of neutrino masses and mixing. The results of neutrino oscillation experiments are interpreted as evidence of three-neutrino mixing. Implications for the mixing parameters and the neutrino masses are discussed, with emphasis on the connection with the measurements of the absolute values of neutrino masses in beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments and cosmological observations.

“…First of all, such an extension makes neutrinos massive and thus perhaps provides the simplest and the most natural explanation of the phenomenon of "neutrino oscillations" (see e.g. Fogli et al (2006); Strumia & Vissani (2006); Giunti (2007) for reviews). The smallness of neutrino masses in this model (called νMSM in Asaka & Shaposhnikov 2005) is achieved by the usual see-saw mechanism with Majorana masses of right-handed neutrinos being below electroweak scale.…”

“…One of the first review article on phenom enology of neutrino oscillations [22] was written soon after the publication of work [4]. The problems in question are briefly discussed in [23,24] and more recently in [25,26]. They are also considered in suffi cient detail in the reviews on various aspects of neu trino physics, such as neutrinoless double beta decay [27].…”

“…Namely, apart from the absence of the DM candidate, the MSM fails to explain observed neutrino oscillations -the transition between neutrinos of different flavors (for a review see e.g. Fogli et al 2006;Strumia & Vissani 2006;Giunti 2007). The explanation of this phenomenon is the existence of neutrino mass.…”
