Abstract:The article explores the general question of how family members articulate the rational and moral dimensions of the economy and the role in this played by language and family discourse-how families do the economy with words. It examines the resources family members employ family discourse to interpret and justify their economic behaviour, and puts forth the hypothesis that economic terms are re-articulated through everyday practices in the family world and that conversations inoculate expert terms with specific meanings. The article introduces the moral economy as a crucial principle of sense-making in family economic discourse and highlights the perception of the future as a key distinction between financial market economies and family-specific moral economies. Three mechanisms by which finance is domesticated are identified: (1) narrativisation-where financial objects are interpreted through the narratives of family history; (2) appropriation-where financial objects are embedded in the family moral economy; and (3) affectivation-where emotions change the meanings attached to financial objects. Narrativisation situates financial objects in time, appropriation sets them in the context of the family-specific moral economy, and affectivation connects them with personal identity and authentic experience.

ResumoO ensaio bibliográfico analisa a literatura que ficou conhecida como virada ideacional. Seu objetivo é, primeiro, resumir as críticas dessa literatura às perspectivas institucionalistas com as quais ela dialoga; segundo, sistematizar suas vantagens teóricas e, por fim, identificar o ferramental metodológico utilizado pelos autores que se filiam a ela. O ensaio baseia-se na análise de uma ampla gama de livros e artigos publicados sobre o assunto nos últimos 20 anos. Por meio dessa revisão bibliográfica, fomos capazes de mostrar como a literatura da virada ideacional permite incluir as ideias nas explicações dos fenômenos políticos. A inclusão das ideias, por sua vez, exige uma postura metodológica pluralista que pode significar avanços importantes para a ciência política.Palavras-chave: virada ideacional; institucionalismo discursivo; construtivismo; comparação; process tracing. Assim, em termos muito gerais, essa literatura defende que ideias importam.Essa proposição, no entanto, não é nenhuma grande novidade. Os clássicos das ciências sociais são pródigos em defender tal premissa, com mais ou menos estofo empírico, em diversos trabalhos. Alexis de Tocqueville e Max Weber são, nesse quesito, dois exemplos incontornáveis. Max Weber é, aliás, o autor clássico mais citado pela literatura aqui revisada, em função da famosa passagem na qual o sociólogo alemão se refere às ideias como "manobreiros que determinam os trilhos pelos quais a ação é impulsionada pela dinâmica dos interesses" (Weber 1981, p.280). Não menos importante são as considerações de Tocqueville sobre os aspectos intelectuais da Revolução Francesa e o sentido quase religioso que a filosofia do século XVIII deu à Revolução ao pensar o homem abstrato e seus direitos universais (Tocqueville 2003). Mesmo no terreno menos fértil do marxismo clássico, não podemos esquecer as considerações de Engels, em carta a Bloch, sobre o papel desempenhado na história pela "tradição que perambula como um duende no cérebro dos homens" (Engels s.d., pp.284-285) ou as referências de Marx ao peso opressivo do passado sobre o cérebro dos vivos (Marx s.d., p.203).

Much ado about nothing? The rhetoric and reality of the nuclear renaissance

Since 2000, swathes of energy experts, government officials, industry representatives and journalists have predicted the emergence of a global 'nuclear renaissance.' Nuclear energy was said to be on the precipice of a new era of development, characterised by widespread construction of new nuclear reactors and a concomitant increase in global nuclear capacity. Despite this expectation, there is little evidence to date which suggests that a revival of nuclear power has taken place in the regions of Western Europe and North America in the way that the rhetoric depicted. This thesis therefore seeks to firstly establish that there is a disjuncture between the rhetoric and reality of the nuclear renaissance in Western Europe and North America, and secondly, to explain why this disjuncture exists.Academic and journalistic debate over recent developments in civil nuclear energy policy has tended to focus on two key reasons for why there has not been a widespread expansion of nuclear energy in these regions. Firstly, that the nuclear disaster at Fukushima in 2011 reignited concerns over nuclear safety, thereby eroding public and political support for nuclear new build. Secondly, that the economic problems facing nuclear development continued to act as a major disincentive to the construction of new nuclear power plants. However, the global applicability of these two issues means that neither of these explanations can explain why the nuclear renaissance appears to have failed in Western Europe and North America, while nuclear new build is expanding in other parts of the world. Moreover, the revival of safety concerns post-Fukushima fails to explain why there was little evidence of a nuclear renaissance taking place prior to March 2011.This thesis provides a contribution to knowledge by adopting a more holistic and inductive approach for understanding why there is a disjuncture between the expectation and reality of the nuclear renaissance in Western Europe and North America. It challenges existing explanations for the failure of the nuclear renaissance as being simplistic, mono-causal and a-historical. This thesis disputes the idea that the absence of a widespread expansion of nuclear energy and the apparent failure of the nuclear renaissance can be attributed to any one problem or event. Instead, it embraces the simple premise that a broad range of contextual factors must be explored in order to fully understand why the rhetoric of a nuclear renaissance has not become a reality.An extensive analysis of government, industry and media documents published from 1945 onwards, as well as interviews with experts in nuclear energy policy, was undertaken in order to establish a better understanding of how and why nuclear energy development changes over time. Through this process, it became clear that the reasons typically cited for explaining changes in nuclear development are 'nuclear-specific factors'.
