Theoretical study of turbulent channel flow: bulk properties, pressure fluctuations, and propagation of electromagnetic waves

Abstract: In this paper, we apply two theoretical turbulence models, DIA and the recent GISS model, to study properties of a turbulent channel flow. Both models provide a turbulent kinetic energy spectral function E(k) as the solution of a nonlinear equation; the two models employ the same source function but different closures. The source function is characterized by a rate ns(k) which is derived from the complex eigenvalues of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation in which the basic flow is taken to be of a Poiseuille type. The… Show more

“…I n the future there should be an improvement in Lagrangian methods resulting from direct simulation of turbulent flows and the computations of trajectories using large computers (e.g. Girimaji & Pope 1990) or by large-eddy or possibly 'kinematic simulations' (Drummond & Munch 1990;Malik 1990;Canuto et al 1990). In particular it will be interesting to see computations of relative diffusion (cf.…”

“…Even when Lagrangian trajectories are better understood and better modelled, they still have to be related to the small-scale molecular diffusion processes (e.g. Canuto et al 1990). Computations and simulations of Lagrangian trajectories will also help other kinds of modelling, notably those based on assumed forms of probability distributions.…”

“…A similar difficulty arises in Canuto et al (1987) extension of Ledoux, Schwarzchild Sz Spiegel's spectral model. A preliminary attempt to include secondary instabilities can be found in Canuto et al (1990).…”

“…As efforts to tackle the problem of anisotropic turbulence on the basis of two-point closure models like the DIA did not bear much fruit owing to the intimidating complexity of the equations, Canuto et al (1990) propose that, to begin with, simpler heuristic models should be used, followed by the construction of more complex models (in analogy with the historical development of the theory of homogeneous isotropic turbulence).…”
