Theoretical prediction and crashworthiness optimization of multi-cell polygonal tubes

Abstract: Multi-cell polygonal tubes are highly efficient energy absorbers and widely used in vehicle engineering. There is no doubt that the structure designers have strong interest to know which kind of multi-cell polygonal tube has the best crashworthiness. However, the comparative study on the crashworthiness of multi-cell polygonal tubes with different edges was quite few. In this paper, the multi-cell polygonal single and bitubular tubes were investigated using the numerical simulation and theoretical prediction m… Show more

“…Additionally, the n ‐cross intersection may be determined from the n ‐cross theory developed by [ 41 ] as W II = 4 t H 2 M 0 tan ( π 2 π n ) $$W_{\text{II}} = \frac{4}{t} H^{2} M_{0} tan \left(\right. \frac{\pi}{2} - \frac{\pi}{n} \left.\right)$$ …”

“…The self-contact experienced by the tube during the deformation was modelled using the single_surface_contact. The developed FE model was first validated using a closed-form formula that was extracted by (Yin et al, 2020) based on the super folding element method and it describes the MCF of ST-III multi-cell hexagonal tube as function of tube's thickness (t) and circumcircle diameter (a) as given in Eq. 1.…”

“…Building upon square tubes, numerous researchers have also investigated polygonal tubes, which are thin‐walled tubes with polygonal cross‐sections. Yin et al 13 have found that the deformation modes of polygonal tubes are similar to circular tubes. The primary factor influencing the energy‐absorbing performance of polygonal tubes is the angle between two sides, and as the number of sides increases, the energy‐absorbing performance improves.…”
