Theoretical modelling of a bi-dimensional U-shaped surface plasmon resonance based fibre optic sensor for sensitivity enhancement

Abstract: Theoretical analysis of a surface plasmon resonance based fibre optic sensor with a uniform semi-metal coated U-shaped probe is carried out using a bi-dimensional model. All the rays of the p-polarized light launched in the fibre and their electric vectors are assumed to be confined in the plane of bending of the U-shaped probe. The effect of the bending radius of the probe on the sensitivity of the sensor is studied. The study shows that as the bending radius of the probe decreases the sensitivity of the sens… Show more

“…16.6c, an SPR fiber sensor with uniform metal coated U-shaped probe is adopted. The bending radius in U-shaped probe makes it possible to tune the sensitivity of the probe [17]. Furthermore, one-side metal coated fibers with and without remaining cladding, and structures with modified fiber tips such as flat or angled structures have been proposed [18,19].…”

“…It was concluded that the sensitivity of the sensor is maximum when the taper profile is exponential linear. Further, a U-shaped fiber optic SPR sensor was theoretically studied for the enhancement of sensitivity [49]. In both the cases, the tapering and U-shaped probes, an enhancement in the strength of coupling of the evanescent field with surface plasmons takes place, which is responsible for the increase in the sensitivity.…”
