There is a huge gap between the broad concept of circular economy (CE) and its practical implementation in the industrial sector due to several types of barriers, which shall be led back to the lack of consistent and precise information about resources, products, and processes. Without a proper information flow, it is impossible to quantify circular initiatives, both in comparison with the actual linear situation or with circular alternative opportunities. A proper quantification of circular initiatives allows the assessment of economic, environmental and social benefits and the preventative identification of potential barriers and relative solutions, monitoring the risk associated with circular investments and supporting the decision-making process. This paper describes a new tool to ensure the quantification of circular initiatives and the method to define it. It is a new Circular Business Model (CBM) visualization tool, which overcomes the main limitations of the existing models able to explain CE concepts but not to boost its practical implementation in industry. The new CBM visualization tool can be adopted in every industrial sector to highlight circular opportunities that are still hidden or unexploited or to select the best CE strategy. The proposed CBM visualization tool differs from the previous diagrams in two main characteristics: (i) the possibility to quantify resource flows and important indicators representing energy consumption, environmental and social impact, and (ii) the focus, which is not only on the product, but on the whole system, involving also the process, the company and the entire supply chain. The methodology to adopt and adapt the proposed model to different scales is described in detail. To provide a practical example, the model was qualitatively applied to a generic technical product to highlight its potential in the identification and quantification of circular activities.

Extended AbstractIn this paper the implementation of SPH method and LBM for CFD simulation of industrial toxic gas scrubbers is presented. Toxic gas scrubbers are used to reduce the contents of toxicities and contaminations in exhaust gases produced by various industries, e.g. mineral material processing, oil and gas refineries.With the help of CFD simulations, producers are provided with a thorough insight of the gas and/or liquid flow. Moreover, they are also able to observe interaction of these fluids with a porous pack inside the scrubbers. This factor is vital in order to optimize the efficiency of absorbers.Scrubbers can be categorized in two different types, active and passive packs, depending on the toxicities, contaminations and particles which are supposed to be absorbed in a porous pack. In active pack scrubbers the porous pack undergoes chemical reaction with flowing toxic fluids. On the other hand, the passive packs do not face any chemical reactions. From another perspective, scrubbers can furthermore be divided according to the geometry of packs, i.e. into structural and non-structural pack scrubbers.An optimised designed pack is one that offers a highest residence time for gases in addition to the uniformed interaction of almost all parts of porous pack with fluid flows. Enough residence time is required to ensure that the chemical reactions can be completed and/or to trap particles in the voids or in the droplets. A uniform flow can guarantee the optimal lifetime of the pack. Thus, maximal maintenance time possible for pack replacement or recovery period can be achieved.However, no matter what type or geometry of the packs inside the scrubbers, the CFD simulation of porous media and its interaction with multiphase fluid flow in large industrial scale constitutes almost always highly complex problems. Considering great differences between the dimensional size of the scrubbers compare to the size of porosities of the pack, an extremely extensive mesh is necessary. This may be very complicated as ordinary CFD methods are still not efficient enough to solve such problems at reasonable computational costs. Even newest studies in this field are based primarily on analytical and experimental methods [1][2][3][4][5].In the present study, LBM has been used to discretise the air and porous pack media. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) has been used for simulation of water sprinklers. The use of LBM drastically decreases the computational time for equipment in industrial scales compare to the ordinary CFD methods. In addition, SPH as a particle-based method helps to simulate water spray much easier. Combining LBM with SPH enables to simulate the interaction of air, porous pack and water droplets, a real challenge for common mesh-based methods. The hardware in use here is GPU instead of CPU which is one of the factors that allows to reduce the computational time on a dramatic scale. The circulatory and respiratory systems in humans are marvels of biological engineering that exhibit competence in maintaining homeostasis. These systems not only shield the organism from external contaminants but also orchestrate the vital gases via the bloodstream to sustain cellular respiration and metabolic processes across diverse tissues. It is noticed that spaces inhabited encounter challenges akin to those of the human body: protecting the indoor air from external pollutants while removing anthropogenic byproducts like carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matters (PM), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) tooutside. A biomimetic approach, composed of a microbubble‐based gas exchanger and circulating liquid inspired by alveoli, capillary beds, and bloodstream of the human circulatory/respiratory system, offer an innovative solution for comprehensive air purification of hermetic spaces. Circulatory/respiratory‐inspired air purification system (CAPS) ensure both continuous removal of PM and exchange of gas species between indoor and outdoor environments to maintain homeostasis. The effectiveness of this system is also supported by animal behavior experiments with and without CAPS, showing an effect of reducing CO2 concentration by 30% and increasing mice locomotor activity by 53%. CAPS is expected to evolve into robust and comprehensive air purification schemes through the networked integration of plural internal and external environments.
