Theoretical investigations of the combined effect of fibre nonlinearities, amplifier and receiver noise in a DWDM transmission system

Abstract: In this paper, Optical Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed Systems (DWDM) employing Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) are investigated with the main emphasis on the fiber nonlinearities like Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) and Four Wave Mixing (FWM). Analysis has been carried out for the calculation of the bit-error-rate (BER) considering receiver noise as well. The dependence of BER on system parameters such as system length, inter-amplifier separation and inter-channel separation has been shown graph… Show more

“…The Optimum value comes about 50 km as shown in Fig. 7 and the value obtained is well coincides with the other studies for a certain set of parameters [9]. The optimum value is corresponds to a point where ASE noise and FWM noise becomes equal.…”

“…A number of studies have been conducted [9,[13][14][15][17][18][19] to find out optimum equal and unequal inter amplifier separations but for a set of parameters [9]. Some of these studies [18,19] have neglected the presence of nonlinearities.…”

“…On the other hand, different kinds of fibers have been designed to reduce the effect of dispersion and nonlinearities [3][4][5]. There are numerous studies about the impairments due to nonlinearities, showing the importance and the complexity of the non-linear phenomena in the DWDM design [6][7][8][9][10]. In this paper, design parameters of a multi-span DWDM system limited by FWM and ASE noise are determined.…”

“…Standard deviations of high state (1-state) & low state (0-state) are represented by symbols r 1 and r 0 , respectively[17][18]36]. Whereas, maximum and minimum values of peak powers of low state (0-state) and high state(1-state) are represented by P 0Max & P 1 Min , respectively[17][18]36].Maximum achieved values of Q-factors and ER (dB) of different logic functions realized i.e. AB, AB, A.B & A È B for the implementation of proposed half-addition and half-subtraction module are illustrated in a tabular & graphical form in…”
