Theoretical Foundations of the Web: Cognition, Communication, and Co-Operation. Towards an Understanding of Web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0

Abstract: Currently, there is much talk of Web 2.0 and Social Software. A common understanding of these notions is not yet in existence. The question of what makes Social Software social has thus far also remained unacknowledged. In this paper we provide a theoretical understanding of these notions by outlining a model of the Web as a technosocial system that enhances human cognition towards communication and co-operation. According to this understanding, we identify three qualities of the Web, namely Web 1.0 as a Web o… Show more

“…In fact, this evolution can point to a shift from a top-down to a bottom-up environment (Alm, 2006), which is reminiscent of the same flux in language pedagogy away from teacher-centered approaches; a flux which can be steadily reached through glocalization. This realization can be detected in Fuchs, Hofkirchner, Schafranek, Raffl, Sandoval, & Bichler's (2010) study, which in an attempt to describe the social dynamics of the Internet, have referred to "Web 1.0 as a Web of cognition, Web 2.0 as a Web of human communication, and Web 3.0 as a Web of co-operation" (p. 41). Chandra (2004) has also referred to glocalization as a liaison for bonding the close relationship between language, thought, individuality, and social identity in the Cyber age.…”

“…A cross perspective of Web 3.0 is provided by Fuchs et al [7]: Supported on social theories of Karl Marx about community building and collaborative forms of cooperation, characterizes Web 3.0 as a system of human cooperation [7]. In fact Web tends to be socio-technical system where human interactions are mediated by technologies and those technologies assume an increase role of represent the system more close of reality [7].…”

“…With Web 3.0 we can mean "the new technologies of the Semantic Web integrated with applications on a large scale" (Hendler, 2009, page 111), digitally developed on the Web and supporting smart technologies (Fuchs et al, 2010). This new system of the Web is capable, through the manipulation of web services (reading-writing-execution), of helping companies to quickly react to changes, through the integration of data and applications coming from various different resources, providing "the capability of identifying relations through the data in different applications or in different parts of the same application" (Hendler, 2009, p. 112).…”
