“…This paper hopes to quantify the additional benefit of high mass solutions using a variety of methods, two specifically targeted at the aid sector: (i) short term monitoring of high and low mass shelters in Afghanistan and Lima, Peru, (ii) dynamic thermal simulation (EnergyPlus) to expand the monitoring results to cover a whole year, (iii) surveys of the occupants and the shelters, (iv) use of ShelTherm 7 – a thermal model specifically design for the aid sector, (v) use of the Shelter Assessment Matrix (SAM), 7 a tool designed to judge the suitability of shelters to a specific location and population, again targeted at the aid sector. The reason for including ShelTherm and SAM is to see if such tools might provide similar results without the need for monitoring, thermal simulation or the involvement of academics or professional engineers, and hence whether humanitarian agencies could investigate design alternatives in other settings.…”
