<em>This study examines the development and maintenance of English skills from the perspective of higher education alumni during and after studying abroad. The researcher consider attitudes, more specifically how, what, and to what extent attitudes could encourage development and maintenance in the context of study abroad from the 120 respondents’ perspective. This study deploys quantitative data collection in form of a survey with both multiple choice items and open-ended questions. The numeric items were analyzed with tabulation and the open-ended questions responses were analyzed with the stages of Thematic Analysis. Foremost, the findings reveal that the respondents perceive oral production and fluency as the major skills that improved during the study abroad period, followed by an increase in vocabulary knowledge and listening skills. Most respondents regarded the improvement as an influence of high exposure to spoken English. Secondly, the majority of respondents conceive that their English keeps improving after the study abroad period. The most frequent reasons for using English are social life and entertainment purposes, which are mostly individual preferences, followed by academic purposes such as joining a course or working on journal articles. Work purpose, surprisingly, is not the main reason of using English after study abroad period. The conclusion is that study abroad benefits the respondents in developing their English and that attitude on affective domain (how we perceive a language) and conative (behaviour toward a language) help to maintain the cognitive domain (knowledge on a language) and its maintenance.</em>

Javanese Language Phonemic and Lexicon Variations in Pekalongan City: A Dialectological Study

This study aims to investigate the phonemic and lexicon variations of the Pekalongan Javanese dialect appearing in Pekalongan City, Central Java, Indonesia. It utilizes a qualitative descriptive study adopted by Creswell and Creswell as the research design. The data were collected through literature review, auditory perception, and data recording techniques. The interactive data analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman consists of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results reveal that lexicon variants present in the Pekalongan Western and southern regions have resemblances in phonemic variants of the Javanese language with the linguistic dialects employed by the inhabitants of Pemalang and Banjarnegara. The Arabic vocabulary that Middles Eastern immigrants adopted has a major influence on the linguistic variances in the Northern area. Conversely, no noteworthy linguistic variants were detected in the Eastern portion of Pekalongan City. An implication arising from this research is the necessity for more examination and classification of the morphology and phonology of existing Javanese dialects in Central Java. These results serve as material for further studies related to linguistic studies/ socio-dialectology of the Javanese language and contribute to preserving the cultural richness and diversity of the local language in Pekalongan City.

Language Maintenance in an Interracial Marriage: The Case of Indonesian Females’ Language Choice in Canada

This study aims to investigate Indonesian females’ language choice in their interracial family in the home domain and factors that contribute to their language choice. Ultimately, the study seeks to describe the influence of language choice on maintaining the Indonesian language amidst multilingual Canada. Semi-structured interviews and observations were employed to collect the data. The participants of this study were three female Indonesians with their Canadian spouses living in Canadian cities. The study revealed that English was chosen as the language spoken at home in each family despite having an Indonesian mother. Although all (Indonesian) mothers code-switch between the Indonesian language and English, the study discovered that the children are passive speakers of Indonesian, some do not even understand their mother language. Social context and motivation are some factors that influence the participants’ language choice. The findings also indicate that language shifts from Indonesian to English were taking place in the participants’ repertoire.
