Theoretical and experimental studies of a new aniline derivative corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid medium

Abstract: 4‐Chloro‐N‐(pyridin‐2‐ylmethyl)aniline (CPYA) was synthesized by a simple and inexpensive method and tested as a corrosion inhibitor in acid medium for mild steel by using gravimetric studies and electrochemical measurements. An average maximum efficiency of 96.0% was achieved at 4.59 mmol/L. Corrosion kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were also analyzed. Surface analyses (atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) show that protection is enabled by adsorption on the metal, forming a film. Qu… Show more

“…The average RMS roughness values for the bare copper, corroded copper, and inhibitor coated copper were 29.17, 73.66, and 58.12 nm, respectively. The copper sample without any inhibitor was severely damaged due the corrosive medium, while the inhibitor-coated sample remarkably showed less damage, as in Figure c and f. This also proves that the ZnPc-S layer protected the copper surface from an attack of the corrosive medium …”

“…The IR spectra of these complexes present a characteristic band at 3189 cm −1 assigned to the amine group (Figs.S1 and S2). This band is shifted upon metal coordination compared with that for the free CPYA ligand at 3365 cm −1[29]. The 1 H NMR spectrum of complex 2 (Fig.S3) in DMSO-d 6 confirms its structure in solution.…”
