Theoretical and experimental investigation of Lamb waves excited by partially debonded rectangular piezoelectric transducers

Abstract: The paper proposes a new hybrid approach technique to simulate acousto-ultrasonic wave excitation and propagation due to operation of the partially debonded piezoelectric transducer attached to a plate-like structure. The semi-analytical boundary integral equation method is applied to calculate guided waves propagation in the unbounded structures and to separate different guided waves in the piezo-induced wave-fields. The obtained model is verified experimentally using the scanning laser Doppler vibrometry. Ei… Show more

“…A common way for the excitation of wave motion in the examined construction is to use piezoelectric transducers of different types. Typical commercially available ultrasonic probes could provide only narrowband excitation and are not designed for the simultaneously efficient generation of all necessary kinds of elastic waves [ 6 , 7 ]. At the same time, increasing complexity of the materials from which modern structures are made, dictates the necessity of the advancements in the transducer design which could address these issues.…”

“…The knowledge about damage mechanism source, its characteristic properties and influence on generated elastic wave has a crucial meaning in proper planning and conducting of the AE testing. Taking into account this features, many researchers analyzed experimentally [18][19][20][21] and numerically [11][12][13] the issues of Lamb wave propagation in composite structures. For example, in [15] Cheng et.…”

“…In the field of guided-wave Structural-Health-Monitoring (SHM) the localization and classification of structural damage is generally the main goal. Ultrasonic transducers arranged as a spatially distributed array are being used [1][2][3]. Of particular interest for targeted maintenance activities is the damage position extracted inversely from ultrasound signals.…”
