Theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetostrictive composite beams

Abstract: Among novel non-destructive evaluation techniques for structural health monitoring, the magnetostrictive (MS)-tagged fiber-reinforced composites stands out as especially suitable due to: (a) distributed sensory properties, (b) non-contact damage detection, and (c) straightforward manufacturing implementation. Experimental data and mathematical modeling of a MS-tagged fiber reinforced composite beam under bending (flexural) loading are presented. A brief review of the state of the art identifies previous w… Show more

“…Many modern techniques have been developed in recent years to meet the challenge of designing controllers that suit the function under required conditions. There have been a number of studies on vibration control of flexible structures using magnetostrictive materials (Anjanappa and Bi, 1994;Bryant et al, 1993;Krishna Murty et al, 1997;Giurgiutiu et al, 2001;Pradhan et al, 2001). Although there have been important research efforts devoted to characterizing the properties of Terfelon-D material, fundamental information about variation in elastomagnetic material properties in a functionally graded shell is not available.…”

“…Rearrangement of the magnetic dipoles chains of the magnetostrictive molecules through application of strong magnetic field was performed by applying a magnetic field through the thickness of the beam using a pair of magnets to apply a field of 800 Gauss. Giurgiutiu et al 29 studied the piezomagnetic response of composite beam tagged with Terfenol-D powders. The beam was 1000 mm long, and had a 100 mm by 6.5 mm cross section It had 7 layers of woven glass roving 36oz./sq.yd with Atlac 580-05 urethanemodified vinyl ester resin.…”

“…With recent developments in sensor/actuator technologies, many researchers have concentrated on control methods for suppressing vibrations of flexible structures using smart materials such as shape memory alloys (SMA) [33], magnetorheological (MR) materials [34], electrorheological (ER) materials [35], piezoelectric transducers (PZT) [36][37][38][39], or using positive position feedback (PPF) to suppress the vibration amplitude of nonlinear systems [40], etc.…”
