Abstract:In arid/semi-arid regions, consumption of deep groundwater resources is increasing due to growing water demand in every sector. Intensive groundwater surveys focused on the Baiyangdian Lake Watershed (BLW) in the northwest of the North China Plain, as the BLW suffers from serious water problems due to high economic growth and improper groundwater resource utilization.To clarify the interaction between shallow and deep groundwater, samples of surface water and groundwater in different aquifers were collected from two cities (Baoding City and Dingzhou City). Major trace element solute ion concentrations and stable isotopes of δ 18 O and δ 2 H revealed that, in a specific region of Baoding, anthropogenic activities have induced interaquifer recharge from Aquifer 1 to Aquifer 2 based on the similarity in chemical tracers. However, such an interaction could not be found in other regions in the study area.

In drier regions, accurate knowledge of groundwater recharge is important for the sustainable management of scare water resources. Thirunelvely in Jaffna Peninsula is an area where groundwater is being utilized for domestic, agricultural and municipal water supply. Further the groundwater in this area also contaminated with nitrogenous fertilizer application due to intensive agriculture, as post war conditions in the Peninsula encourage farmers to engage in intensive agricultural activities. Very few or no studies have been conducted in the recent past on groundwater recharge or solute transport such a fertilizer leaching in this area. HYDRUS-1D is a Windows-based modelling environment for analysis of water flow and solute transport in variably saturated porous media. HYDRUS-1D is just as quick and cheap as other soil moisture balance models but more physically based and flexible as it allows for building up complexity as data are available whether for solute transport or non-equilibrium flow etc. Therefore the main objective of this paper is to simulate potential groundwater recharge using HYDRUS-1D and compare it with the results obtained in Thirunelvely using soil moisture balance and water table fluctuation methods. Results have shown that the HYDRUS-1D simulated potential groundwater recharge (41.8 cm) has close agreement with that estimated by other methods with high coefficient of determination (R 2 = 0.95). Further runoff, soil moisture storage and bottom pressure head simulated by HYDRUS-1D too have good agreement with field observation. Therefore HYDRUS-1D is capable of simulating potential groundwater recharge close to the previously estimated values in Thirunelvely as it has good agreement with the water table fluctuation measured in the study site and the bottom head pressure at the 1 m soil profile simulated in the HYDRUS-1D model. Now that it has been demonstrated that HYDRUS-1D adequately reproduces the water fluxes predicted by other C S. De Silva 44 methods, it could be used for groundwater recharge with more confidence and to investigate pollution in soil zone and groundwater.

Analytical solution and computer program (FAST) to estimate fluid fluxes from subsurface temperature profiles

This study details the derivation and application of a new analytical solution to the onedimensional, transient conduction-advection equation that is applied to trace vertical subsurface fluid fluxes. The solution employs a flexible initial condition that allows for nonlinear temperature-depth profiles, providing a key improvement over most previous solutions. The boundary condition is composed of any number of superimposed step changes in surface temperature, and thus it accommodates intermittent warming and cooling periods due to long-term changes in climate or land cover. The solution is verified using an established numerical model of coupled groundwater flow and heat transport. A new computer program FAST (Flexible Analytical Solution using Temperature) is also presented to facilitate the inversion of this analytical solution to estimate vertical groundwater flow. The program requires surface temperature history (which can be estimated from historic climate data), subsurface thermal properties, a present-day temperature-depth profile, and reasonable initial conditions. FAST is written in the Python computing language and can be run using a free graphical user interface. Herein, we demonstrate the utility of the analytical solution and FAST using measured subsurface temperature and climate data from the Sendia Plain, Japan. Results from these illustrative examples highlight the influence of the chosen initial and boundary conditions on estimated vertical flow rates.
