Abstract:The aim of this paper is to reconsider some aspects of the so-called clause/noun-phrase (non-)parallelism (Abney 1987 and much subsequent work). The question that arises is to find out what is common and what is different between the clause as a Complementizer Phrase (CP)-structure and the noun as a Determiner Phrase (DP)-structure in terms of structure and derivation. An example of structural parallelism lies in the division of the clause and the noun phrase into three domains: (i) the Nachfeld (right periphery), which is the thematic domain; (ii) the Mittelfeld (midfield), which is the inflection, agreement, Case and modification domain and (iii) the Vorfeld (left periphery), which is the discourse-and operator-related domain. However, we will show following Giusti (2002Giusti ( , 2006, Payne (1993), Bruening (2009), Cinque (2011), Laenzlinger (2011, 2015 among others that the inner structure of the Vorfeld and of the Mittelfeld of the clause is not strictly parallel to that of the noun phrase. Although derivational parallelism also lies in the possible types of movement occurring in the CP and DP domains (short head/X-movement, simple XP-movement, remnant XP-movement and pied-piping XP-movement), we will see that there is non-parallelism in the application of these sorts of movement within the clause and the noun phrase. In addition, we will test the respective orders among adverbs/adjectives, DP/Prepositional Phrase (PP)-arguments and DP/PP-adjuncts in the Mittelfeld of the clause/noun phrase and show that Cinque's (2013) left-right asymmetry holds crosslinguistically for the possible neutral order (without focus effects) in post-verbal/nominal positions with respect to the prenominal/preverbal base order and its impossible reverse order.

Cet article étudie la syntaxe et la sémantique des constructions du vietnamien où l’élément auxiliaire apparaît à droite du syntagme verbal. À première vue, cette distribution représente une objection aux propositions universalistes de Kayne 1995 et Cinque 1998, objection qui a déjà fait l’objet de deux analyses (Duffield 1998 et Simpson 1997, 1998). Le présent article réexamine les faits soutenant ces précédentes propositions. Il montre que ces faits sont insuffisants pour justifier la complexité dérivationnelle de l’une ou de l’autre interprétation, et propose un traitement plus simple, qui prend en considération l’interprétation des conditions grammaticales et extragrammaticales régissant le placement de l’auxiliaire en vietnamien, tout en conciliant ces distributions avec les principes universels.This paper is concerned with the syntax and semantics of Vietnamese constructions in which a modal element appears unexpectedly to the right of the verb-phrase. Prima facie, this distribution presents a challenge to the universalist proposals of Kayne 1995 and Cinque 1998, a challenge that has been addressed in two previous analyses: Duffield 1998 and Simpson 1997, 1998. The present article re-examines the empirical evidence supporting those previous proposals. It is argued that this evidence is insufficient to justify the derivational complexity of either account. A simpler alternative treatment is proposed which takes account of the various grammatical and extragrammatical conditions governing modal placement in Vietnamese, while simultaneously reconciling these distributions with universal principles

The main purpose of this paper is to provide experimental evidence that two syntactic reflexes of split intransitivity in German -the selection of perfective auxiliaries and the impersonal passive constructionare sensitive to an aspectual/thematic hierarchy of verb classes. We show that there is a split between 'core' verbs that elicit categorical intuitions from native speakers, and 'intermediate' verbs that exhibit gradience. Furthermore, crossdialectal differences between northern and southern German with respect to auxiliary selection tend to occur only with intermediate verbs. We argue that these findings lend support to the view that the unaccusative/unergative distinction is considerably more unstable than often assumed, and suggest that projectionist theories of the lexicon-syntax interface such as those directly derived from the Unaccusative Hypothesis may not be able to account for the systematic variation exhibited by the data.3
