The ZEPLIN-III dark matter detector: Performance study using an end-to-end simulation tool

Abstract: We present results from a GEANT4-based Monte Carlo tool for end-to-end simulations of the ZEPLIN-III dark matter experiment. ZEPLIN-III is a two-phase detector which measures both the scintillation light and the ionisation charge generated in liquid xenon by interacting particles and radiation. The software models the instrument response to radioactive backgrounds and calibration sources, including the generation, ray-tracing and detection of the primary and secondary scintillations in liquid and gaseous xenon… Show more

“…The ZEPLIN-III instrument [22,23] is a dual phase liquid/gas xenon detector, built to observe low energy nuclear recoils resulting from elastic scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The final scientific exploitation of the longrunning ZEPLIN project at the Boulby Underground Laboratory (at 2850 m w.e.)…”

“…ZEPLIN-III [1][2][3] is a dark matter search instrument for the direct detection of weakly interactive massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic scattering from xenon target nuclei. It records nuclear recoil events via two response channels: scintillation and ionisation.…”

“…More recently, xenon dual-phase detectors have been developed for dark matter search, namely for the detection of Weak Interacting Massive Particles [3][4][5]. In both cases, signal amplification in the gas is achieved by accelerating the electrons resulting from the radiation interaction to excite the gas atoms by electron impact, leading to the production of secondary scintillation, the so-called electroluminescence.…”
