The zCOSMOS redshift survey: how group environment alters global downsizing trends

Abstract: Context. Groups of galaxies are a common environment, bridging the gap between starforming field galaxies and quiescent cluster galaxies. Within groups secular processes could be at play, contributing to the observed strong decrease of star formation with cosmic time in the global galaxy population. Aims. “…Thus, an interesting result is that our data, covering a longer redshift baseline than the Iovino et al (2010) study, show a more or less constant f red up to z ∼ 0.6 before seeing a drop. Such a description of the change in f red for galaxies in poor environments with redshift is in fact also consistent with the data of the "Isolated" sample of Iovino et al (2010), with their three F blue data points covering the redshift between 0.2 and 0.6 being consistent with having similar values within their uncertainties.…”
