THE X-RAY ZURICH ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY (X-ZENS). I.CHANDRAANDXMM-NEWTONOBSERVATIONS OF ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI IN GALAXIES IN NEARBY GROUPS

Abstract: We describe X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton of 18 M group ∼ 1-6 × 10 13 M , z ∼ 0.05 galaxy groups from the Zurich ENvironmental Study. The X-ray data aim at establishing the frequency and properties, unaffected by host galaxy dilution and obscuration, of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in central and satellite galaxies, also as a function of halo-centric distance. X-ray point-source detections are reported for 22 of the 177 galaxies, down to a sensitivity level of f 0.5−8 keV ∼ 5 × 10 −15 erg cm … Show more

“…This is inconsistent with the notion that AGN are predominantly in central galaxies (e.g., Starikova et al 2011;Richardson et al 2013), as our results suggest a significant fraction of AGN are in satellites. This agrees with several recent studies (Allevato et al 2012;Oh et al 2014;Silverman et al 2014). Additionally, using a subhalo-based model that corrects for catalog incompleteness, we find that the host galaxy stellar mass distribution can determine the environments of AGN on average, via the stellar mass-subhalo mass relation (Behroozi et al 2010).…”

“…The insensitivity of AGNs to the host group's mass has previously been noted (Padilla et al 2010). Li et al (2006) and Silverman et al (2014) find a higher prevalence of AGNs in the cluster's central galaxy. The cluster center in our study is not the same, however, and the effect may be washed out by the satellite population.…”

“…In particular we present data taken during the past few years with the XMM-N ewton and Chandra telescopes on a subsample of ZENS groups. In this paper we focus on the diffuse X-ray emission while we report on the X-ray pointsorce detections in a companion paper (Silverman et al 2014) aimed at investigating the role of AGN in the context of galaxy evolution in groups.…”
