Abstract: The X-radiolysis of water vapor containing methanol at 125 "C and 1 atm pressure has been studied alone and in the presence of some electron and hydrogen atom scavengers. In water vapor containing methanol only, a plateau value G(H2) = 7.9 k 0.3 is obtained at all methanol concentrations above 0.5 mole %.

It was found that the effect of additives on the radiation induced reactions of aqueous polyethylene oxide solutions cannot ,l y explained solely on the basis of competition between polymer and additive for 4drbgen abstracting radicals. Polymer-solvent and polymer-additive interactions were found to be important. Some systems studied were best described in terms of the effect of additive on the radiation chemistry of water and the action of products of additive-radical reactions on the polymer. Pdditives capable of influencing the ratio of intra to intermolecular crosslinking przuced marked effects. The results indicate that polyethylene oxide is very reactive toward the hydroxyl radical, less so toward the hydrogen atom, and relatively inactive toward the solvated electron, although solvated electron scavengers increase the dose required to gel. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Die Wirkung von Additiven auf die strahlungsinduzierten Reaktionen waBriger Polyathylenoxidlosungen konnen nicht allein d u c h eine Konkurrenz von Polymerem und Additiv um wasserstoffabspaltende Radikale erklart werden, sondern es sind Wechselwirkungen zwischen Polymerem und Losungsmittel einerseits und Polymerem und Additiv audererseits zu berucksichtigen. Einige der untersuchten Systeme werden am besten durch den Effekt des Additivs auf die Strahlungschemie des Wassers und die Wirkung der Reaktionsprodukte aus Additiv und Radikalen auf das Polymere beschrieben. Additive, die in der Lage waren, das Verhaltnis zwischen intra-und intermolekularer Vernetzung zu beeinflussen, ergaben ausgepragte und komplizierte Anderungen des STAUDINGER-Index. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, daB waBriges Polyathylenoxid gegenuber dem Hydroxylradikal sehr reaktionsfahig ist ; weniger reaktionsfahig ist es gegenuber dem Wasserstoffatom und relativ inaktiv gegenuber dem solvatisierten Elektron, obwohl solvatisierte Elektronenfanger die Dosis fur die Gelbildung erhohen.
