Paramagnetic alignment of suprathermally rotating grains is discussed in view of recent progress in understanding subtle processes taking place over grain surface. It is shown that in typical ISM conditions, grains with surfaces of amorphous H 2 O ice, defected silicate or polymeric carbonaceous material are likely to exhibit enhanced alignment, while those of aromatic carbonaceous material or graphite are not. The critical grain sizes and temperature for the Purcell's alignment are obtained and preferential alignment of large grains is established.

Radial collimators have been recently introduced to de®ne the sampling volume during neutron diffraction stress and texture mapping experiments. This paper presents both analytical and Monte Carlo numerical models for the calculation of the spatial distribution of neutron transmission through a radial collimator. It is shown that the effective size of the scattered neutron beam as seen by detectors behind the collimator is quite sensitive to the collimator length and the number of blades. For a given radius of a collimator, the effective beam width increases sharply as the length is shortened. Due to the ®nite blade thickness, the center of gravity of the sampling volume is shifted away from the collimator. In contrast, attenuation of the neutron beam by the sample brings the center of gravity of the sampling volume closer to the collimator.

In this article we describe results of a photoelectron backscattering effect in vacuum phototubes: classical photomultipliers (PMT) and hybrid phototubes (PH). Late pulses occurring in PMTs are attributed to the photoelectron backscattering and distinguished from pulses due to an anode glow effect. The late pulses are measured in a number of PMTs and HPs with various photocathode sizes covering 1-50 cm range and different types of the first dynode materials and construction designs. It is shown that the late pulses are a generic feature of all vacuum photodetectors - PMTs and PHs and they don't deteriorate dramatically amplitude and timing responses of vacuum phototubes
