SUMMARY -Th e aim of the study was to examine the prevalence of head injuries, acute stroke and brain tumors obtained from computed tomography (CT) scans in the emergency department (ED) during a one-year period. We also assessed the potential eff ect of seasons on the occurrence of stroke, head trauma and tumors found on CT scans, expressed in monthly intervals. Th is retrospective review included all patients that underwent emergency head CT from the hospital database. A total of 3888 head CT examinations were performed in adult patients presenting to ED and 1424 CT scans had at least one pathologic fi nding meeting diagnostic criteria for the study. Of the total number of CT scans analyzed, acute stroke was identifi ed in 552 (14.19%), head trauma in 660 (16.97%), and brain tumor in 212 (5.45%) patients. Head trauma was more commonly found in males (n=465, 70.45%) than in females (n=195, 29.54%). Acute stroke was slightly more common in males than in females. Brain tumors were more frequently found in female patients. Th ere were monthly variations in the number of head injuries and acute stroke diagnosed during the study period. Men and elderly patients were found to account for the greatest number of traumatic head injuries and therefore are at the highest risk of possible brain injury.

Background: There is lack of knowledge on the epidemiological characteristics of brain tumors in Middle Eastern countries. The objective of this study was to study the epidemiological features of primary brain tumors in Jordan. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study incorporating data from 16 hospitals in Jordan during a 1 year period (May 1, 2011-April 30, 2012). All primary brain tumors diagnosed in Jordan during the study period were identified. The following parameters were retrieved from patients' files: age, gender, histological type, and location. The demographic data of the country was obtained from the National Department of Statistics. Results: A total of 313 primary brain tumors were identified during the study period. The incidence of primary brain tumors in Jordan among the general population was 5.01 per 100,000 person-years (5.38 in females and 4.65 in males). The incidence in pediatric, adult, and elderly patients was 2.09, 7.29, and 14.38 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. The most common histological types were meningioma (26.2%), glioblastoma (18.9%), astrocytoma (14.1%), and pituitary adenoma (9.3%). Conclusions: The incidence of primary brain tumors in the Jordanian population is relatively low, in part due to the young age of the general population.

Hyperglycemia has been associated with poor outcomes of patients with various diseases. There were several studies published to assess the association between hyperglycemia and prognosis of patients with brain tumors, but no consistent conclusion was available. We therefore performed a meta-analysis of available studies to evaluate the prognostic role of hyperglycemia in brain tumors. Several common databases were searched for eligible studies on the association between hyperglycemia and survival of patients with brain tumors. Two investigators used a set of predefined inclusion criteria to assess eligible studies independently. The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were used to assess the prognostic role of hyperglycemia. Finally, seven studies with a total of 2168 patients with brain tumors were included into the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis of total seven studies showed that hyperglycemia was significantly associated with shorter overall survival of brain tumors (HR = 2.04, 95% CI 1.51-2.76, P < 0.001). Meta-analysis of studies focusing on hyperglycemia showed that hyperglycemia was still significantly associated with shorter overall survival of brain tumors (HR = 1.82, 95% CI 1.29-2.59, P = 0.001). Meta-analysis of three studies on diabetes showed that diabetes was significantly associated with shorter overall survival of brain tumors (HR = 2.09, 95% CI 1.22-3.57, P = 0.007). Meta-regression analysis showed that there was no obvious difference in the roles of between hyperglycemia caused by glucocorticoids and hyperglycemia from diabetes (P = 0.25). Thus, hyperglycemia has an obvious prognostic significance in patients with brain tumors, and hyperglycemia is significantly associated with shorter overall survival of brain tumors.
