The World robot summit disaster robotics category – achievements of the 2018 preliminary competition

Abstract: The World Robot Summit is a robot Olympics and aims to be held in a different country every four years from 2020. The concept of the Plant Disaster Prevention challenge is daily inspections, checks, and emergency response in industrial plants, and in this competition, robots must carry out these types of missions in a mock-up plant. The concept of the Tunnel Disaster Response and Recovery challenge is emergency response to tunnel disasters, and is a simulation competition whereby teams compete to show their ab… Show more

“…Robots and machinery used in unstructured and dynamic environments typically employ rigid, fully-actuated robotic grippers and hands. From autonomous search and rescue and fire fighting robots (Miyazawa, 2002;Hamins et al, 2015) to heavy machinery such as excavators (Sulaiman et al, 2015) or dual arm robot platforms used in earthquake recovery work (Egawa et al, 2013;Tadokoro et al, 2019), all these systems are equipped with different types of robotic end-effectors that employ rigid fingers. Such platforms are designed to manipulate irregular objects assisting humans in the execution of complex tasks.…”

“…One example is the Japanese ImPACT project. The ImPACT Tough Robotics Challenge, a national project of Japan Cabinet Office developed robots for disaster response, recovery and preparedness between 2014-2018 [7]. Robots developed include UAVs, construction robots, serpentine robots, legged robots, cyber rescue canine, and several component technologies.…”
