“…Sever fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a recent confirmed tick-borne disease caused by the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), the virus which is classified in the family Phenuiviridae , genus Phlebovirus ( Yu et al, 2011 ). In 2009, the SFTSV was first identified in the rural area in central China, and after then although SFTS cases had been reported in other East Asia, including Japan ( Kurihara et al, 2016 ) and Korean ( Park et al, 2016 ), the most SFTS cases were reported in China. From 2011 to 2016, the annual case numbers increased year by year in China ( Sun et al, 2017 ), SFTS has already posed as a severe threat to public health.…”

“…The other highlight was that the cluster comprising eleven SFTS patients occurred in Yixing County, China, in 1996, which preceded the cases in Japan in 2005 reported by Kurihara et al . that might be mistaken as the earliest SFTS cases worldwide[ 17 ]. Our result suggests that SFTS have existed for a long time without being recognized.…”

“…From the published documents, two SFTS cases in Japan in 2005 reported by Kurihara et al . have been regarded as the earliest cases in the world [ 17 ]. A recent phylogenetic study on SFTSV in China, South Korea, and Japan demonstrated that SFTSV could be divided into the Chinese clade and the Japanese clade, which may have evolved separately over time, except for the rare occasion of overseas transmission[ 18 ].These results suggest that SFTS may have existed without being identified for some time.…”

“…From 2010 to 2016, over 10,000 SFTS cases, with an average mortality rate of 5.3%, were reported in 23 provinces in China according to the Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System 8 . The virus was then identified in Japan and South Korea 1 , 2 , 9 , 10 . SFTSV infections resulted in 46 reported deaths out of 170 confirmed SFTS cases in Japan (a mortality rate of 27.1%) until 2016 2 and 54 deaths out of 172 SFTS cases in South Korea (a mortality rate of 31.4%) until 2015 11 .…”

HRTV was identified from patients with clinical symptoms similar to those observed for SFTS in the United States in 2009, which has a close genetic relationship to SFTSV 5 .…”
