The Working Methodology of Japanese Graphic Designer Yui Takada and Its Impact on Design Practice

Abstract

This essay will introduce the new generation of Japanese graphic designer Yui Takada, who won the JAGDA (Japan Graphic Designers Association) Newcomer Award, which is known as the highest honor of the graphic design in Japan. He is also an Associate Professor at Tokyo Zokei University. Japanese contemporary design presents a diverse approach under the discourse of western hegemony. A group of original and fresh designers gather in this country. They use a distinct perspective to create stunning visual effects, which profoundly affects the public's perception towards aesthetics. Although Takada's works are considered "ugly", it tremendously influences Japanese design trends, aesthetic judgments and educational development to a certain extent. He uses his works to resist modernist design and advocates the creation of a unique personal style, as well as, what he has done, arouses the public's thinking about "beauty" and also makes people reflect creative educational concept in Japan.
